Cascade Mountain Tires For Sharp Rocks

Free Ride, Cross Country and All Mountain tires. Arrow Racing has a history deep in the MTB scene. Gus and Mary Jane of Arrow Racing have been making these super tires for years and travel the circuit selling them from their trailer. Gus invented the first Hardtail long ago and sells the frame all over the world. Amazing how something can stay relevant because the frame gets used by top racers still. Arrow tires are used in the Pacific Northwest, the Great Lakes area and Northern New England, in short, anywhere the rocks are sharp and inclines are steep. Many of the polished and refined euro centric brand name MTB tires get shredded on the sharp rock of Oregon and Washington's' Cascade Mountains, but not the Arrow line of tires because they have been carefully crafted over a twenty year period. Not light, not wimpy either, Arrow has about the toughest tire we think you can buy.

Clement Tires Live On

A travel back in time ...

Would reveal that Clement is the tire to beat in races throughout the 80's and 90's. Clement was bought by Pirrelli and the production was moved to Thailand. After eight years, Pirelli backed out and left the facility in the hands of the employees. The old Clement tires aren't being made anymore under that name and now the name is "Challenge" and in many cases the new Challenge tires are virtually indistinguishable from the original Clement tires. For those who require authenticity can still get Clement tires. For years the tires were imported by EuroAsia who stockpiled many of the rare and hard to find racing tires. When recently asked, EuroAsia said they had plenty of the old Clement tires left and that includes the Criterium and Pista and others as well. Not cheap. but when looking for an edge, why not use a really good tire albeit 15 year old ones? The tires are still good and will scare the pants off any riders who catch the logo. Be feared.... Ride Clement.

Smooth As Silk

Another Dugast tire, this one made of silk.

The pink color looks as if it is glowing from the inside. It reminds one of an old cigar box with the lettering on the tire. A tire like this would be used only for races and at close to $200 a tire, one would assume that one would fly with this pink baby. With a very serious look, this kind of tire wins a place in our hearts and would probably win a medal at the county fair if there was such a contest.

or a rare bottle of wine, tires of this ilk are hard to find. Few suppliers carry them and they are soooo expensive but you will go faster if that matters to you. Andre Dugast makes tires in the Netherlands and they make them the old fashioned way. Sometimes using cotton or sometimes using silk, the rubber is laid up by hand and tires like this generally have only one layer with maybe one layer of puncture protection. The trick to a good racing tubular tire is to make them with out a bump where the valve stem is. A lot of tubulars don't lay flat. Dugast makes a striking retro style tire that looks like a throwback from days gone by. But don't be fooled, these are very modern, just made by hand.

You don't notice it right away

but when you look at a spoke real close, you can see lots of dings, scratches and marks. In the case of the spoke above, it looks like its' face has been smashed in. But you'd never notice it when laced up into a wheel. The wheel when put together with other ugly spokes, a round rim and a hub becomes a thing of beauty once it is mounted on a bicycle. Like that spoke, I am ugly but together with others, I shine. Please use this as a reminder to give of yourself every once in a while. Join others who try to make a difference and use cycling as your hook in the realm of giving. We like organizations who provide bicycles to people for work purposes so we feature a few of them in our retail location but so many of them do such good, it is almost impossible to recommend one over another. Used by all the top pros, San Marco has been at the forefront of cycling for decades. One of the things we like is the retro Italian theme the company has and they have a great slide show at their website with all kinds of old photos and little bit about their company. A lot of times European websites can be tedious, but this one has some freshness to it and while not completely in English, it does entertain with lots of eye candy.

It means business people can test the water, leverage manufacturing down time and produce products for super defined niches in the market.
